With its expansive aromas of violet, rose petal, saddle leather, and orange peel, this red blend is a sensory experience like no other. The broad flavors of blackberry, plum, and cassis fill the palate, while hints of dark chocolate and baking spice add complexity and depth to the blend. The firm but refined tannins of this red blend give it excellent structure, and the long, silky finish is a testament to the winemaker's skill. This robust red is delicious now, but for those with the patience to wait, it will age gracefully.Pair this layered and complex red blend with a Filet Mignon, slow-roasted Osso Buco, or peppercorn-crusted New York strip steak for an unforgettable dining experience.

These bold California reds will pair beautifully with barbecue, grilled steak or game, pizza, roasted lamb, and wild boar ragu. I chose to pair both wines with a simple week night meal of Chili Beef Sweet Potato Enchiladas. The Enchiladas were layered with flavors including sweet potatoes, ground beef, roasted poblano peppers, cocoa powder, brown sugar, green chili sauce and pureed chipotle pepper in adobo sauce. Topped with cheddar jack cheese and the coolness of a lime, cilantro Mexican crema sauce; it was a great weeknight meal that beautifully with the layers of flavors and complexities of both Matchbook wines. I especially enjoyed the marriage of the smokiness and cocoa of the enchiladas with the wines.
The Matchbook Arsonist and Tinto Rey pair old world grapes and style with new world techniques to craft wines that seamlessly blend soft fruit notes with dusty earthiness. These wines deliver well beyond their price points. I really enjoyed these wines!

The March issue of the Wine Analytics Report examines the current winegrape market that reached an uneasy balance thanks to several lighter than average crops and lackluster demand for the wider US wine market. The report also features an in-depth interview with Kent Waliser who is the director of vineyard operations at Sagemoor Vineyards in Washington state and examines the ongoing strength of high-priced wines among direct-to-consumer shipments that grew by 6% in February to more than $372 million.

This eight-month oak barrel aged wine opens with enticing aromas apricot, butterscotch and honey. The stone fruit flavors follow through on the palate, layered over luscious crème brûlée, vanilla, toasted oak and butter. There is a nice weight to the wine that leads to a long, lingering finish. This wine pairs well with charcuterie chesses and meats, poultry, scallops, lobster and grilled fish.

Pinot Noir Here you have extremely precise and focused fruit with a sharp mineral edge. Red fruit, baked bread, floral notes and wild herbal honey carry through on the long, sensual finish. The wines...
I love the wine as well. This 100% chardonnay from the Dunnigan Hills AVA is golden yellow with slow legs. The nose brings honeysuckle, Bartlett Pear, coconut, and toast. I immediately noticed the smooth and round body, soft on the palate with pineapple, melon, and honey.

80% Tempranillo, 9% Petit Verdot, 8% Tannat and 3% Graciano from the estate vineyards of Matchbook Wines in Dunnigan Hills, Yolo County, Central Valley, California. The wine was aged in a combination of French, Hungarian and American oak barrels (22% new) for 29 months.
The Tinto Rey Tempranillo from Matchbook Wines has an SRP of $18. We found it at Costco for just $11.89 which is significantly less than the wine-searcher average of $17. Only 2,757 cases were produced so I'm guessing not many Costco locations have it.
The 2015 Matchbook Tinto Rey Tempranillo opens with a wonderful aroma of blackberry, leather, spice and a healthy dose of vanilla. The wine tastes smooth, savory and delicious and is full of dark fruit along with more well integrated spice, vanilla and lots of other oak influence. Well-balanced, it even has a little bit of smokiness to it.
It ends dry, long and luscious. I really enjoyed this California Tempranillo which is done quite well especially with the 29 months in oak and rather similar to what you find in Ribera del Duero or Toro where the vines are from.

Blending is the core of great wines for wine makers, much like food ingredients brought together by a chef to create a great dish. Winemakers combine not only different varietals, but may unite the same varietal of grapes grown in different areas of a parcel or different varietals from the same estate or from different vineyards. Combinations can also include wines from different vintages. The marriage of different grapes allows the winemaker to have more control of the signature wine they want to produce. With infinite influences from Mother Nature, blending may enhance a wine that fail to blossom that particular vintage.
Both Penfolds and Matchbook are using their experience and history to bring new possibilities into the future. For Matchbook, Spanish born grapes raised in California such as Tempranillo, Tannat, Graciano and Verdejo are being fermented into wine while Penfolds is collaborating with Champagne House Thiénot to make a Chardonnay Pinot Noir Cuvée, and single vineyard Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs. 041b061a72
